Can anyone suggest a good allround scale? You something that's good for improvising or writing songs? I'm trying to write something metalcore-ish, if that helps you :)

Natural Minor and Harmonic Minor work good for metal.

in the key of a A minor:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G <--- natural
A, B, C, D, E, F, G# <--- harmonic

on the fretboard that would be (from low E to high E)

5 7 8
5 7 8
5 7 9
5 7 9
6 8 10
7 8 10

or for harmonic

5 7 8
5 7 8
6 7 9
5 7 9
6 9 10
7 8 10

or the trusty Pentatonic that muffucka seems stock or plain at first but after you play with it for a while you can extend it and add to it then again my theory is not that sharp just think or watch some of Zakk Wyldes scale runs. Rock On Bud.

Yup both suggestions are great. Yeah, most metal songs and such have quite a bit of harmonic minor influence. Pentatonic is a good choice too!

E: 12 15
B: 12 15
G: 12 14 (15 for the blues note)
D: 12 14
A: 12 14 (13 for the blues note)
E: 12 15
